My wild journey!

While studying the Point Zero method of painting with Michelle Cassou in San Francisco, I experienced a major breakthrough in my own creative process. I painted some really crazy images! I pulled some unknown skills and images from within myself and that was really mindblowing. I loved it so much that I went to Los Angeles to study this method of painting again. It is this atmosphere of creativity which I hope to open up with workshop participants on March 20th. (read more)

Latest SIP, DRIP & DRAW workshop was a blast! We focused on letting go of preconceptions, challenging self-imposed limits in creativity and to work from a sense of intuition and play. Stephanie Pollock, a personal coach for motivated Mompreneurs, had some great things to say about her experience.

My Paintings in Alberta Treasury Branch

The Alberta Treasury Branch purchased 6 of my paintings for one of their new branches! They have been wonderful to deal with the art work looks great in that space. The location of the ATB is on McLeod Trail North and 13th Avenue SW. They were interested in Calgary based scenes. Here is a few pictures of the work hanging in the bank.

Commissioned Paintings of Vancouver Building

Jacqulynn Mulyk was commissioned to paint two images of the Crossroads building in Vancouver, BC. This building is located on Broadway and Cambie. This building has a combination of office, residential and commercial, a wonderful mix for this street. The back of the building has a wall garden and each angle of the building offers interesting architecture.

Bad Hockey Poetry

STANLEY CUP IN JUNE

Journey up mountain side,
While blades glide,
down cool ice,

Inside.

Lounging lake side,
While sticks and,
Men collide,

Inside.

Sunset flushed cowboys ride,
Flowers and creeks alive,
While here we huddle,

Inside.

Bright sun mountain side,
While eyes glued to,
screen 45" wide,

Inside.

Icy battle fought with pride,
while some where a summer bride,
The cup, the cup, is why I am,

Inside.

HALF-NAKED MEN

I love hockey because sounds,
lights, darks, highs and lows,
all intermingle with one another.

Uniform teams move to memorized moves,
while erratic lights and sounds,
flash and beat out to the crowd.

An announcement blairs,
competing with the heavy breathing
of the players and spectators.

I love hockey because the bleachers
squeeze all the people together.
Calgary's unified palette,
ever shifting, swaying bending and standing.

I love hockey because before and after
men sit together half-naked in a small room
looking foward to seeing the first
women who will be coming around.

I love hockey because the ice is smooth
and has semetrical lines in primary colors.
A circle defines the middle and all the
players have a vital role to play.

Artist in Residence, Edmonton

"Urban Park Through the Eyes of Children." was taught to grades 1, 2 and 3 over a one week period. I saw each class for two 45 minute sessions and one 60 minute session. We worked outside sketching for one session, practicing with the paint and learning technique with the second session and then painting a large format painting for the last session. We had a great time. Here is a wonderful quote from the principal of Mary Hanley School:

"Jacqulynn, thank-you for giving our students this exciting experience with drawing and painting. They are so proud of their sketches and love their sketchbooks. You have instilled a love for art! I know the students and staff enjoyed working with you again. Thanks for your gift of time and expertise! We loved having you here."

I supplied the children with sketchbooks for our week together and I was pleasantly surprised at their enthusiasm for using the book both during and after class. The teachers remarked, "The kids were all outside drawing during recess and lunch time! I can't believe we didn't think of this before!"

Yes, kids still love to draw. The simple pencil and paper can inspire their creativity like nothing else. A sketchbook, in all its intimacy, can be a very powerful tool for all ages and abilities.

I took the children outside to draw a small natural area of their school ground. We started with the dandelion. Not very many people have stopped to admire the beauty of a dandelion.

Learning to take some time to observe nature and to draw while looking at the live subject is a skill that reaches into all other areas of study. To slow down and study a flower, leaf or other small natural object is rarely done by either children or adults. It is absolutely necessary for an artist. Once the children understood that they are expected to study one object for 10 to 15 minutes they began to relax. Kids are so often rushed from one activity to the next. In my class, they are expected to slow down. Immediately, their drawings improved 10-fold.

I would walk around and talk to each child individually and ask them what details they noticed of their subject and how they would draw that detail. At first, they didn't believe they had the ability to draw a likeness, but once their pencil hit the paper and they slowed down their movements, a quality drawing would appear. They would look at me with amazement, "I drew that flower!"

Drawing is not a skill we are born with, it is our ability to slow down and study a subject with genuine interest, which is the catalyst for good art work. We need to recognize relationships of lines and form and to look at each part of the form with immense curiosity. Once you have that, you will learn how to draw.
